Body Language

The language of the body permeated today's class: Can you feel this part of your body having a dialogue with that part?  Can you foster a relationship between the front body and the back body? Can you feel how, in this position, what is going on with your arms that speak to the alignment of your lower body? Do you notice how one side will almost speak a different language from the equal on the other side?

Just Breathe! (B.ringing R.enewed E.nergy A.round T.he H.idden E.ntrails)

In times of difficulty, stress or nervousness, we often hear a very familiar phrase from another caring soul, “Just Breathe.”  But what does that even mean?  Aren't we breathing 20,000 times a day already?

Our bodies record the stories that play out during our lives. Our breathing patterns shed light on the parenthesis between the phrases -- elucidating insights about our state of being and doing--  as one moment unfolds into the next ...

Aha is a Teacher’s Ta Da!

A dear friend once told me that the easiest way to learn is to teach others. Truth be told when asked what I do for a living I often want to answer, ‘I’m a full time student’ but I realize this doesn’t exactly compute. I spend much of my days teaching private yoga and pilates classes – surely I should answer ‘I’m a teacher.’ In all honesty I never learn as much as when I see the ‘aha!’ moment in a student’s eye and know that what I’m working to convey is known and felt and much like the Velveteen Rabbit – made real. [...]

Tense Sense

Before my private pilates circuit session today with the sweetest of the sweet Sarah, I was dragging myself to make the walk to Anya. I have been battling a bout of insomnia for the past two nights and the lack of rest had seriously effected my ability to articulate my muscles in even the simplest of motions. My brain felt fatigued and refused to cooperate. My mind and my body were simply not connecting, the conversation was weak. But Sarah’s bright spirit and smiling heart is always inspiring, and she compassionately challenged and encouraged me-my body and my brain-to enliven and awaken! [...]

Embrace C.O.M.F.O.R.T (C.ompassionate O.fferings M.ade F.or’s R.elief/T.ransmutation)

“If it is one man’s karma to suffer, isn’t it our dharma (duty) to help ease his suffering and pain?” Sri Mata Amritananda-mayi Ma

“Life is suffering” says the Buddha.  What can seemingly be a very grim outlook on life only seems that way because we cannot wrap our minds around the process of overcoming the suffering. [...]

Anatomy of a Yoga Studio

This week I attended both Mods and Lila, two of the more challenging core classes available at Anya (pause for applause...thank you). But this post isn’t going to be about how great I am for doing a bit of exercise for once. It’s about a theme I noticed while doing that work in various parts of the Anya studio: lines.

Ground down to Rise Up

First, I look at my feet. I witness my feet.  How do I prove to myself that I have feet, and that I can use them to ground me when I need them?  I scan and I sketch the foot with my outside eye so that I internalize this existential query and know that I have feet to ground into the Earth.  In order to bring this experience into the body, ANYA offers five exercises on the floor.

Mind Banter

“What's encouraging about meditation is that even if we shut down, we can no longer shut down in ignorance. We see very clearly that we're closing off. That in itself begins to illuminate the darkness of ignorance.”

The Bones of It

Have you ever been humming along in a Yoga or Pilates class when you realize all the other students are panting, sweating and shaking, barely able to sustain a pose that you just popped right into, easy peasy? Well, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but you were probably doing it wrong.

Spread the L.O.V.E ( O.f V.astness E.xpressing)

“Without love we stand alone, separated from the core of existence.” – Osho
Love! What is love?  Some would say it’s guaranteed by blood. Others find it in friendships. Many share it with pets. It’s easy to see in moments of beauty, courage and grace. Evidently, it is something we can fall in and out of.  And, surely, Western culture promotes Love as that which completes us. Whether we identify with the head over heels Romantic or the naysaying critic, how we experience love depends on our individual story.
