“The sound of a jet, an engine warming up, even the clopping of shod hooves on pavement brings on the ancient shudder, the dry mouth and vacant eye, the hot palms and the churn of stomach high up under the rib cage.” - John Steinbeck
Then go north where the floating ribs hold their own … (f5)
To experience the breath as real, touch the ribs! When we take opposite hand to opposite ribcage, we cross- connect polarities to reboot the nervous system and feel balanced and energized. The hands play our ribs like an accordion and the mind + body become playful partners in evolution. Joseph Pilates was a big proponent of “wringing out the lungs” by way of a forced exhalation harnessed by the powerhouse muscles, until we know what that really means as an “experience”, let’s
use our imagination to make a blueprint of the region.
Now, seated or standing, place right hand on left ribs and left hand on right ribs. Inhale, create a pull feeling in the hands to hypnotize the ribs to expand or center-flee. Now, exhale, and create a push feeling in the hands to negotiate the ribs to contract or center seek. On the next inhale -- also center-flee the sit bones. Then, exhale and envision a line of dialogue from the left floating rib to the right sit bone and from the right floating rib to the left sit bone.
Repeat this process for 3- 5 minutes and label it as “Engaging the Ribs”.
